Statement of The United Nations Association of Malaysia (UNAM) on the Situation in Gaza

The United Nations Association of Malaysia deplores in the strongest terms the deadly devastation, loss of life and injuries inflicted on the civilian population of Gaza by Israeli forces since October 2023.

More than an estimated 40,000 Palestinians have been killed just in the past ten months and a phenomenally larger number, mainly women and children have been injured while over 1.7 million Palestinians have also been displaced creating a catastrophic humanitarian disaster. In this regard UNAM lauds the humanitarian gesture of the Malaysian Government in evacuating some of the seriously injured Palestinians and providing them with medical assistance.

In calling for an immediate end to these atrocities UNAM fully supports and endorses the Malaysian government’s consistent and principled stand on the just struggle for a Palestine homeland.

UNAM views the reference made to the ‘killing fields’ of Palestine by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as accurate and appropriate. It is a long overdue description of the disproportionate and aggressive assault against the people of Palestine.

UNAM calls for an immediate and sustained ceasefire and an end to the bloodshed that has gone on for far too long.

Further Palestine’s right to full membership of the United Nations endorsed by more than 140 member states ought to be heeded by the entire international community and has to be acted on as a matter of urgency.
