About Us

Who Are We ?

UNAM was incorporated as a a voluntary, independent, non-political, non-profit, non-governmental organization in 1985. Back then it was known as the United Nations Malaysia Association or UNMA. However this was changed to United Nations Associations Malaysia or UNAM in line with the requirements of the World Federation of United Nations Associations or WFUNA of which we are a member.

Our Objectives


  • To support the United Nations and its development;
  • To foster interest among the people of Malaysia in the work of the United Nations and of its Specialised Agencies;
  • To promote friendship and understanding among different people and nations;
  • To promote the development of peaceful cooperation among nations;
  • To strive for recognition of, and respect for, human rights and fundamental freedoms;
  • To promote international cooperation in the social, economic, educational, cultural, scientic and political fields;
  • To promote research, information and education in respect of the principles, activities and potentialities of the United Nations and its Specialised Agencies;
  • To help other public bodies or institutions of higher learning to established UN Clubs and to promote activities related to the ideals of the United Nations including organizing or assisting in organizing Model UN sessions (MUN) and whenever possible to send representative/s or select UN Club representative/s to similar MUN activities overseas;
  • To be a member of the World Federation of United Nations Association (WFUNA) and to attend and participate in the activities of WFUNA;to organize seminars, dialogues and other forums to promote peace, social progress and wellbeing of all people in Malaysia;
  • To raise funds for related UNAM activities including contributions to Malaysian UN Clubs, sponsorship of Malaysian representatives to UN or overseas UN Club activities and select charities in Malaysia; and
  • To cooperate with other NGOs to promote peace, progress and social development.

Our History


UNAM was incorporated as a voluntary, independent, non-political, non-profit, non-governmental organization in 1985.Back then it was known as the United Nations Malaysia Association or UNMA. However this was changed to United Nations Associations Malaysia or UNAM in line with the requirements of the World Federation of United Nations Associations or WFUNA of which we are a member.UNAM’s principle founders, YM Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen and Dr.Ian K.M Chia ensured that membership was open to all persons who subscribe to the ideals of the United Nations. UNAM’s members comprises former Malaysian ambassadors, diplomats, academicians, students and individuals

The motto of UNAM- “We are the World” was chosen by the Prime Minister of Malaysia at that time, YAB Dato ’Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad who is also the Patron Of UNAM
